What you'll learn
A big emphasis in Kirk’s work is back story. This is a key ingredient to making characters with personality and appeal. Through a series of interviews and case studies we’ll examine Kirk’s approach in detail.
The classic fundamentals of shape language are always at play in good character design. In this course there is an emphasis on using shape language in a simplified and straight forward manner.
Don’t waste time looking for too much reference. Kirk will show you how to be strategic in using a reference to complement your established vision of a character.
You will see the tips, tricks, and even 3rd party plug-ins Kirk uses to speed up his work in Illustrator. Since Motion Design often requires vector-based art, becoming more proficient in Illustrator is valuable.
Kirk will show you how he uses Photoshop to add texture and enhance color. Adding that extra grit to your illustrations is a great way to compliment solid vector shapes.
Photoshop is a powerful tool for illustrators who start with vector art. Kirk will show you his process of adding a lighting pass to an illustration using simple tool in Photoshop.
Throughout this workshop, you’ll be engaged in hands-on learning right from the start. Follow along with Kirk as he progresses through the stages of design and create your own original characters. A great exercise and potential portfolio piece.
